HOLIDAYS IN GREAT BRITAIN
Great Britain has the following public holidays: Christmas Day. Boxing Day. New Year's Day. Good Friday. Easter Monday. May Day. Spring Bank Holidays, and Summer Bank Holidays.
Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. It is the most colorful holiday of the year. Most big cities are decorated with coloured lights. In all homes there is a great air of expectation. Children decorate Christmas-trees. They also hang stockings by their beds. They hope that Father Christmas will come down the chimney. Christmas is a family holiday. People gather together and eat traditional Christmas turkey and Christmas pudding. In the streets people play snowballs and make snowmen.
The 26th of December is called Boxing Day, because many years ago the day after Christmas people traditionally went to the church.
In England New Year is not as popular as Christmas. It is usually a family party. It begins in the evening and goes on until morning. There is a lot of tasty food. People have a wonderful time.
Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. It's a religious holiday. On this day people eat hot-cross buns.
May Day is the first Monday after the first of May. It is celebra¬tion of the coming of spring.
During Bank holidays all banks, offices, factories and shops are closed. People enjoy their meal in the open air.
Besides public holidays there are some special festivals in Great Britain. One of them takes place on the 5th of November, when people burn a straw figure of Guy Fawkes and have a party with dancing and a barbeque.
