Inspired by the traditional ballad of the same name
It was the hottest summer evening that we had last year; That's when I met a man so handsome, perhaps an engineer. We swam in the river for hours and slept on the bank; When the sun woke me in the morning, I had no-one to thank.
When winter came, it was obvious, I was heavy with child. When spring got near, it was very clear, I had to hide for a while And where I hid and what I did is no secret to the one Who let the world become a mess and a mother kill her son.
The day was cold when I came back, a rainy day in may. On the wayside all unclothed a little boy would play. If you were my own little boy you would be dressed in silk, I once was yours and wasn't worth a drop of your milk.
When the time has come for me to go by Heaven's gate, I know I will be left outside if I supplicate. Women like me should all learn this good lesson well Or they might burn just like me, down in the pits of hell
