See I have kept the greatest sadness to myself
I have kept a record of unfortunate despair
And Lydia, for whom I've strongest affection
Is in another country far away from my attention
Well I suppose I've arrived at something more than I've expected
I believe I am much better off with what I have
I would hope the same is true for Lydia, though I can't say for sure
Perhaps she is lying wide awake and wishing she had something more
There are a few things time and distance cannot alter
There are a few things I would say now if I had a chance
There is a space I fear is occupied by Lydia
But frozen as it is in time, I cannot justify it being there
So all the time I spent committing this to memory
Is time apart from living outside bitterness
But Lydia, who knows no greater advocate than innocence
Is far away from my protection or deliverance
