In 1984 Pierre Boulez decided to offer a personal tribute to Sir William Glock in the finest manner open to a musician, by dedicating his latest work to him. Sir William Glock had long been a sincere friend and admirer of Boulez's, and had sustained him from the beginning of his career as composer and conductor, appointing him to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1964 onward. Whilst Boulez's musical tribute also intended to re-evoke those years of his past, it is no coincidence that the new work should in part re-echo with a world of composition which is more typical of his less recent production. Thus we have a Dérive – the title as always in Boulez is difficult to define and translate – characterised by unpredictable though not random patterns of the various instruments: flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone and piano. The brief composition is clearly divided into two parts, the first in slow tempo, the second rhythmically more unstable but guided by clear contrapuntal invention sustained by the piano. he harmonies of Derive, which Boulez has deliberately made quite static, are embellished with trills and grace notes which lend the piece a sense of ineluctable progression, almost as though the music truly were \"adrift\". And this, perhaps, is the meaning of the title. The first performance of Dérive was given in London in 1985 by the London Sinfonietta.
