Manfred wanders in the Alps. Tormented by hopeless longings and recollections of past crimes, he suffers deep spiritual anguish and is torn by fatal questions of existence. Neither the sciences of the occult, whose mysteries he has plumbed, nor anything in the world can afford him the forgetfulness which he seeks in vain. The memory of the beautiful Astarte, whom he loved passionately but lost, gnaws at his heart. Nothing can remove the curse which weighs on his soul. Manfred is abandoned to the torture of endless despair.
