hello smoky mysterious christmas trip

the ceremony lasted for seven days on the banks of the holy river. bodies were burned on pyres continually and the ash and smoke filled the air, along with the burning of intense incenses and the smell of the flavoured ceremonial teas. the holy people conducted their rituals, their chanting and singing spiraling up around us all as we gathered on the banks. each day after sun-down lamps, icons, trophies and assorted relics were floated out onto the water as we watched them slowly sail downstream on the gentle current of the holy waters. musicians playing such complex orixa rhythms on gamelan drums, north- african flute melodies, ouds hammering arabian scales, clarinets wailing western jazz motifs and metallic percussion scraping and clattering the ancient ritual hymns; all combining in a never-ending long drone of spontaneous composition in tribute to the unraveling proceedings. we slept but a few hours at night, huddled together around the sporadic fires that had been started all along the banks of the river, the sound of myriad insects teaming and swarming though the ash cloud air lulled us to sleep as smoothing drones.
