I stand on the shore the forlorn border of an arid landscape haunted by groaning winds a desert where the wounded dwell
My eyes stretch across an azure horizon where sky and sea blend into a single serene eternity
My heart is gripped I am enthralled by a longing inescapable and within the lapping waves sirens are singing:
come, come, come
I enter drawn deeper by an oceanic aria luxuriating in soothing liquidity that numbs my wounds and stills my desperate mind peace at long last, peace in the heart’s deep core
and I am drifting
Fierce and sudden, the currents come, turning the water piercing cold a horrid gale brings clouds, nightmare-black, to fill the sky the locks of the approaching storm a terror begins gnawing at my gut
and I am sinking
Pulled, every inch of me, downward further into an abysmal depth the dim, surface-breaching light fades like the sun’s warmth blown out by night’s breath and I can see no way out there is only deeper and darker.
