Callum: Hello I'm Callum Robertson and this is Talk about English, live from studio S6 in Bush House London.
In today's programme we're joined by two teams who will be fighting it out for the Talk about English trophy. They will be answering questions on general knowledge, the English language, our special topic, Fashion and they'll also be trying to win your votes in our Talk about English debate.
Let's introduce today's competitors.
Guests introduce themselves – brief intros: name, where they come from etc.
Hear each team's buzzer & my buzzer for bonus points.
Callum: And before we get started with today's quiz, here is a question for everyone listening live online. This question is bit of a riddle and it's not as difficult as it might seem – so think carefully. On a clear day if you were standing on top of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, what's the furthest thing that you could see? If you think you know the answer, email us at talkaboutenglish@bbc.co.uk or enter through the competition page of the website where you can also see the question again.
Now on with the quiz
Round 1 – FASHION QUESTIONS Our current Talk about English Topic is fashion. For the first round of the quiz I'll ask the teams questions based on this topic which are taken from two areas of the BBC Learning English website. They are the Words in the News story from January 26 th , 'Spain resizes clothes for women' and also the Weekender programme called 'Size Zero' about the results of a body image survey. The teams have looked at the pages in advance, so let's get started, if you know the answer, press your buzzer.
First the results of the BBC survey.
How many people took part in the survey? About 25,000
What did more than half of the young women in the survey say they would do to improve their looks? Have surgery
What did most women in the survey believe about themselves? That they weren't thin enough
What does size zero mean? Very small U.S. dress size that would fit a girl
GONG
Callum: And that's the end of the first round
There has been quite a lot in the media about body image recently – do you think this is a big issue in your country?
(Response from contestants)
The media is full of pictures of celebrities and models. Fashion magazines show an image of women and men that is often very different to the everyday person on the street. What the public sees in the media can have a big influence on what the public do and what the public think. This could be positive and this could be negative. And this is the topic of our debate.
Celebrities and the media have a lot of influence on the way people want to look and dress. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Our two teams have a maximum of three minutes each to put forward arguments in favour of one of these points of view. And if you are listening to this programme live you can vote on which team makes the best argument. The team which gets the most votes will get an extra point. Also as the teams are speaking I'll award them extra points for good arguments and good use of English.
First - :
The English Studio team (Max 3 minutes)
