The Beatles - Teen Set Interview (Excerpt, Accents) | Текст песни

August 24th, 1964 (Bel Air, Los Angeles)

WAGNER: Say, can you speak with an American accent, Paul?

PAUL: Can I… no. [laughs]

WAGNER: You can.

PAUL: Yeah, sure, yes yes sir, yessirree, sir!

WAGNER: How about you, John? Do you speak American at all?

JOHN: Here’s one. Yes, hello, how are you? Is that American?

PAUL: More Liverpool, that.

JOHN: More West Coast, I think.

WAGNER: Where is Liverpool? [John and Paul laugh]

PAUL: In the Northern part of England, ‘tis. In fact, London’s at the far South, you see. And Liverpool’s about halfway up, but it’s called the North.

WAGNER: Are you experts on accents?

PAUL: Not really, no.

JOHN: We can recognize them, though, can’t we?

PAUL: [sage-like] We can recognize them anywhere, yes.

WAGNER: How are some of the accents, could you show us?

PAUL: Um, you’ve got the Cockney one, which is all – [cacophony of John and Paul’s voices talking over each other] – yeah, I ‘ad him half an hour ago, John, it’s alright, yeah.

JOHN: Are you alright, Paul?

PAUL: Then the Liverpool accent is a little different, because like, you can’t—

JOHN: Like – [drawling] Paul!

PAUL:—you can’t hardly understand us. If it’s very broad, like. But eh, my uncle Harry, like, has got a very strong über accent—

JOHN: [lisping] Is that the man from Capitol?

PAUL: That’s him, yeah.

JOHN: That’s the fella, isn’t it.

PAUL: And then we get the other accent, which is [when] the girls would go to the dance hall in Liverpool, and it’s a very strange accent, that, because it’s all uh—

JOHN: [gregarious] “Eh, Paul, sing for us cousins Chris and Irene. We went ‘round to Litherland Town Hall the other day…”

PAUL: That’s another one, you see. It’s very, uh – there’s many varied accents.

JOHN: That’s accent two we’ve done.

PAUL: And then you get the Irish accent, which is just across the bay—

JOHN: [languid] And oh, Paul, so much in Edinburgh, they talk a bit like that, don’t they?

PAUL: I know, it’s wonderful, John, I like the way you say that.

JOHN: They don’t exactly incline their voices so much as the rest of the Scots. This voice is definitely more Auntie Edie, up there.

PAUL: You see, he’s got an auntie up there, and she speaks rather like that… [squawking] “Alright then, Ma! [John laughs] How are you, then!” And then about ten miles away from Liverpool, we have Wales

JOHN: I thought this [interview] was about songs!

PAUL: It was, it was originally about songs, but it’s got onto accents. We’ve got Wales, and they all talk like tha

JOHN: [trilling] Ah… hello, I’m back!

PAUL: Hello there, love it, absolutely lovely to see you there! That’s a very funny accent, that is.

JOHN: [inaudible; John and Paul laugh]
