On this show we talked about stress patterns and the difference between “whether” and “if”. Here are some points:
Nouns=stress the first syllable; CENter, OBject, FLOWer. Verbs=stress the last syllable; reLEASE, arrANGE. Noun and Noun=stress the first part; DESKtop, BOOKshelf. words ending with “t ion” or “sion”=stress the syllable before last; techNIcian, graduAtion, informAtion.
“Whether” and “if” can be used interchangeably in reported speechin a question without a question word: example: I’m not sure WHETHER/IF I’ll be able to go.
Certain verbs are followed by “whether” but not “if”, e.g., discuss. example: We discussed whether we should do another show or not.
Use “whether” but not “if” before TO - infinitives and after prepositions. example: My sister-in-law doesn’t know whether TO GET married or not. I haven’t decided the question OFwhether to change my job or not.
