Preview: On this show we talked about how we spent our Christmas holidays and some of the New Year resolutions that we made. slang expressions about money.

Next, we addressed Hiromi’s question again about the use of “any”. She wonders why in some cases the singular form of a countable noun follows, e.g:

“Any person who violates this provision shall be liable for ……” OR
“If the company violates any provision, it will be liable”.

In these example sentences a singular countable noun (”person”, “provision”) follow the determiner “any”. This is because we want to emphasize the meaning of “any” as “of any kind”. So the original sentences can be seen thus:

“Any person (of any kind) who violates this provision shall be liable for ……” .
“If the company violates any provision (of any kind), it will be liable”.

Also, if it is one part of a group, we could use a singular countable noun after “any”, e.g:

“Choose any pen you want” (there are a group of pens on the table to choose from).
“Any person can leave the room” (there are a group of people in the room).

Note: “any” is normally used with uncountable and plural nouns, and generally not with singular countable nouns, but as the above situations show, it is grammatically possible sometimes.
