On this show we talked about the phrasal verb “to hang out” and discussed the Japanese custom of loud speaker vans as well as the exciting subject of laundry.

Laundry Tips
Sort your stuff!
Follow care directions on clothing labels.
Choose the right cycle and water temperature.

Laundry Idioms
dirty laundry - Personal affairs that could cause embarrassment or distress if made public e.g: Let’s not air our dirty laundry in front of our guests.
money laundering - to illegally hide funds.
soap operas - day time serial dramas aimed at housewives.

We answered some comments from the mail and highlighted some of our mistakes:
a) “To spay” means to make a female animal unable to have babies.
b) “To neuter” means to make either a female or a male animal unable to have babies.
c) “To castrate” means to ‘desex’ a man or a male animal.
d) Addidas and Puma are German sport companies and not Italian as we guessed on the previous show. But well done Italy, you are number one in the world.

pet peeve - something that annoys and irritates you e.g: one of my pet peeves about Japan is the loud speaker vans of politicians.

catch ones eye - something that makes you notice e.g: wow, that expensive sports car caught my eye!

some time to kill - spare time that you have to spend as you please.

Phrasal Verb
“Hang out” has several meanings:

1) it can mean to hang things you’ve washed outside on a washing line so that they dry e.g: oh no!! I just hung the washing out an it’s raining now.
2) it can mean to spend time at a place or with someone e.g: those kids always hang out by the 7-11.
3) it can be a used as a noun e.g: the BNRS page is a great hang-out for learners of English.
4) to hang out for something in Australia means to wait until you get a good price in a bargaining situation e.g: if I were you I’d hang out for a better deal.
5) to hang out to dry means to abandon someone e.g: the hostage was left to hang out to dry.
