The Bob and Rob Show - Lesson 43: Summer festivals and political ads | Текст песни

Lesson 43: Summer festivals and political ads. Jul 19th, 2006

On this show we talked about the phrasal verb “to break down”. We also discussed summer festivals in Japan and omikoshi, which are the portable shrines carried by festival goers here in Japan in the hot and humid summer. We also mentioned takoyaki, a sweet ball-shaped dumpling with a piece of octopus in the middle. Yum!

Extra Language
Fair enough = this expression is generally used to show agreement
loin cloths = cloths, which tie minimally around the groin area. Common in Japan at festivals

Ancient Japanese English Study Secret
Here are some polite ways to interrupt someone:
I’d like to know…how much the red jacket is.
I’m interested in…buying a one-way ticket to New York.
Could you tell me…how to make an international phone call?
Do you know…when these shoes will go on sale?

Phrasal Verb
“to break down” has several meanings:

1) it can mean to analyze in detail e.g: we need to break this problem down.
2) it can mean to stop working properly e.g: My car broke down last week on the motorway.
3) it can mean to become mentally ill e.g: He had a nervous break down.
4) it can mean to cry e.g: the lady broke down after her mother passed away.

Would You Vote for Me?
Transcript: My name is Bob Bruce and I’m running for the Executive Council. I believe that there is a better way to be an Executive Councilor. I feel that we need a more positive, ethical, efficient and pro-active council. While I don’t have all of the answers for all of the issues that we face, I believe that my experience as a naval veteran, in law enforcement, as a fire fighter, in aviation and engineering, match what is needed in Concord (name of State Capitol) to get the job accomplished. Go to bobbruce.org for the better way. Remember: send a neighbor, not a politician to Concord.
