As a branch of ling L is closely connected with other branches of ling: grammar, stylistics, phonetics & history of the lang.
Phonetics studies the auto form of the W, also studies intonation patterns of utterances. Since phonetics serve to distinguish <> Mgs it participates in signification. The importance mb illustrated by the so called spoonerisms. Spoonerism - words which as a result of an accidental or jocular transposition of the initial sound of two or more words (or dear old Queen - our queer old Dean). Phon. means are employed in W-building process. They are sound interchange & shift of stress. SI is the alternation in the ph-mic composition of root used to diff-tiate <> diff-t Ws (Blood-to bleed). It’s often combined with affixation (to heal-Health)/ affixation+shift of stress (democrat-democracy). SS is sometimes the only means of diff-tion <> Ws (‘conduct - to con’duct). SI & SS aren’t productive WB means at present. The interrelation <> L & Gram is conditioned by the close tights <> the obj-s of their study. Every W belongs to a certain part of SP having cert. lex, gram characteristics of the W class to which it belongs. Ws possess both lex & gram-l Mg. Sometimes no rigid line of demarcation cb drown <> them (fruit - uncountable, becomes countable & forms s-plural when denoting diff-t kinds of fruit, or figuratively (f-s of enlightenment). Some Ns have 2 pl. Fs - the older & regular (s). => Diff-t pl. Fs have acq-ed diff-t l-l Mgs (a brother - brothers, brethren). The ties <> L & Gr are strong in the WBing. Coz of Eng Gr Sys (wide spread conversion <= anal type). Stimes GrFs are used 4 Bing new Ws. (pl. su-x “s” m. form a new W with new Mning). This process is called lexicalization of a GrF (colours-flag,customs). Stylistics: St studies diff-t functional styles of human SP. L dealing with Voc studies lex means of diff-t func styles. Some Ws are more general & neutral in tone (St-ly unmarked), others are marked (#poet.speesh). Acc to this or that criteria Ws fall into diff-t St strata within the sys. of the St. differentiation of Voc (Im in excellent/tip-top shape). Hist of the lang: # the Eng letter can reveal the way etim doublets came into being, diff-t in F & Mning, but having the same origin. securus (Lat) - sure,secure(Eng). Concl: L is one of the most imp br-ches of Ling,dealing with the Voc of Lang & closely connected through its subj (the W) with other br-ches of Ling.
