You call it d.i.y. and I call it crap. Next empty word, nothing's behind that. You call it d.i.y. and I call it shit. Another empty word, nothing stands behind it.
Competition! Punk rock stars! Mainstream tactics! Gossip and lies!

We all wipe our mouths and asses with this magic word. Everything we do is D.I.Y. and we act like we discovered it only recently, forgetting that people have always acted this way .
The D.I.Y. scene is the opposite of the mainstream. But we oppose the mainstream only in the machinery of making music - how we play as bands, how we communicate, how we record and release our music, how we set up tours and how we travel to play shows.
And yes, it's all beautiful that we can try some other ways to work those things out. But thats about it with the
differences 'cause at the same time we still copy some mainstream behaviours. We still follow the scheme of stars and audience and we help its manifestation with things like:
putting one band name bigger on the poster, giving some bands more money only because they play longer or are more important - no matter how many kilometers they drove.
Also bands themselves use this situations with statements like: "I will not play with this band, it's us or them" or by stupid fights about who will play first at the show. By talking behind the others' backs, by rivalising, by gossiping and making false stories, by envy...

We all make those divisions between eachother and we really can not stop doing that. And this doesn't only concern musicians in the independent scene, but also activists, zine makers and show organizers.
We erect hierarchy as if we couldn't live without it. Those who are active a longer time, are the wiser, smarter, more experienced and professional folks. But we often forget that they also make mistakes or sometimes are closed minded and can not modify or improve their horizon.
New people, fresh blood have another look at the case that should be considered, not depreciated. Cause otherwise we just perfectly copy the mechanisms of society, which are hierarchical, patriarchal (the indisputable wisdom of fathers) and ageistic (respectable olders are not those who live long but those who are active long - but shouldn't we evaluate things by quality, not the time elapse?).
I have the impression that as long as we don't redefine our way of thinking about active people in the scene (off course not belittling their work), we will not be a real alternative to the mainstream scene. But this is the work everyone has to do individually.
