I am an accountant and work for one of the big accountancy firms.
We look at the financial records (accounts) of a lot of companies.
We work with the accountants of those companies, and the people, who work under them: the bookkeepers.
Sometimes we act as auditors and audit a company’s accountants.
That is we check them at the end of a particular period to see if they give a true and fair view.
An audit can take several days, even for a small company.
When a company’s results are presented in a way that makes them look better than they really are, it may be accused of creative accounting or window dressing.
Following are some of the pros and cons of working in accounting.
PROS.
It basically a white collar job.
You can have an office or use part of your home as an office.
Accounting profession is very busy, but predictable, you generally know that you will be busy.
Accountants are always in demand.
CONS.
Accountant’s work is very stressful, because you are responsible for someone else business records.
All you have is their word that what they are giving you is accurate.
Tax laws change from year to year and if you miss a small change you could cause your employer to have to pay a fine / penalty.
If there is an accounting variation which makes it appear that the books have been «cooked“ you are the first suspect and have to prove your innocence.
This job is very painstaking.
To be an accountant you need such traits of character and skills like: assiduity, patience, analytical ability and attention to the details.
