You were walking along the bay when you saw two seagulls fighting over a Kentucky Fried Chicken leg. It really brought you down. And you were walking along the bay and of course the birds were fighting trying to bring one another down (like they always do in this town) and there’s just no getting away. You said: Open the French doors. I need some more air than I get through those bullet holes. I need air in here and besides that I want to throw eggs on the people that are screaming on the street, cause they’ve been screaming all night. And you were stealing from Walgreen’s. They might as well hang a sign that says “everything is free.” It’s so easy, until it wasn’t. A security guard chased you across the street. You threw your medicine in a post box and said: Yeah, prove it. He just knocked you down and proved it And the guy who saved your life, or at least you think he did, with one of those alternative treatments he concocted himself. Well he died in his rehab and it just didn’t make any sense. How he fell down the stairs and broke his neck and he left you alive. You said: Open the windows, I’m not getting enough air through the bullet holes.

And then when it happened that the city or the chemo became too much. You started stealing voice recorders and breaking them all the time. And the ideas came to you in a rush. You said there were angels in your throat and they were illuminating you from the inside. And you suddenly heard operas and marching bands, but they kept you up all night. They stayed in your head all night: The Dan Rather Waltz. And all the politicians roaring; And the sequoias falling; And the Vincristine in your blood; It came in a rush.

And if this neighborhood doesn’t kill you then you’re already dead. Or you’re just dead in the head. Have you ever worried about your brain? But you can’t even walk to the bay; I can’t even suggest it. Not even a walk to the bay, because the birds are fighting like they do every day.

And if the city doesn’t make you, well then it’s gonna to destroy. And even if it makes you, it’s still gonna destroy. And if your life doesn’t reward you, well then it’s gonna deny you. And even if it gives you, it’s gonna take it all away. And if this world doesn’t melt down, it’ll make you suffer for living. And if the city doesn’t make you crazy, then you’re already dead. You’re already dead.
