[2008] [FSRCD031] The Super Phonics «Interstellar» Freestyle Records
From the same production and songwriting powerhouse that spawned The Sound Stylistics (Freestyle’s biggest selling CD of 2007) comes an altogether new and funkin release for 2008…
It was late one night in a small bar in downtown Tokyo that the idea for The Super Phonics came about. Dominic Glover & his good friend Terry Washizu (A&R man at Pony Canyon Records Japan) were sat having a "few” pints of Guinness after an Incognito gig at the legendary Blue Note club. "What would be great" said Terry, "is if someone did a record along the lines of Joey Negro's 'The Sunburst Band' project, but better. More funk, more disco, more groovin' & movin' to that 70's beat but with the added twist of being more commercial in the sense of appealing to a wider range of people. Yet still retaining that 'live' feel. You know, real musicians doing what they do best. Tearing the s**t out of their instruments with funkumental solos, bootytastic get down and boogie grooves, and pumping heart-stopping basslines."
"You know what?" says Dominic Glover (a.k.a Dj Deirdre the DJ in a dress). "That's sounds right up my strasse. I'm well in to the funk/disco and rare groove of the 70's and so are the other guys I work with in the studio. Plus, I reckon I could get plenty of the best musicians around to come down to the studio and work on this idea and record a wicked album for you. What do you reckon?". "Go for it" said Terry.
And thus it came to pass that born into this world, a hybrid of Funk/Disco/House/ Rare Groove & tunes to make you move, was 'Interstellar', the new album from The Super Phonics. Featuring the cream of the UK's Acid Jazz & Funk Scenes including Jan Kincaid & Simon Bartholomew (The Brand New Heavies), Jean Paul 'Bluey' Maunick (Incognito), Gary Crockett (The James Taylor Quartet), Nick Van Gelder (Jamiroquai), Snowboy (The Latin Section), Jim Hunt (Primal Scream, Richard Ashcroft), Mike Smith (Blur, Gorillaz) and many more…
