Eartha Mae Kitt (January 17, 1927 - December 25, 2008) was an American actress, singer, and cabaret star. She was perhaps best known for her highly distinctive singing style and her 1953 hit Christmas song "Santa Baby". Orson Welles once called her the "most exciting woman in the world." She was also known for playing Catwoman on the 1960s Batman television series.

Kitt was raised by Anna Mae Riley, a black woman whom she believed to be her mother. She went to live with a black man when Eartha was 8. He refused to accept Kitt because of her pale complexion. Kitt lived with another family until Riley's death. She was then sent to live in New York City with Mamie Kitt, who she learned was her biological mother; she had no knowledge of her father, except that his surname was Kitt and that he was supposedly a son of the owner of the farm where she had been born. Newspaper obituaries state that her white father was "a poor cotton farmer."

"Santa Baby" is a 1953 Christmas song written by Joan Javits (the niece of Jacob K. Javits) and Philip Springer. Although Tony Springer is listed as co-writer, he was a legal fiction created for purposes of membership in the performing rights organization BMI. The song is a tongue-in-cheek look at a Christmas list sung by a woman who wants the most extravagant gifts like sable, yachts and decorations from Tiffany's.

"Santa Baby" was originally sung and recorded in 1953 by Eartha Kitt. The song was a huge hit for Kitt, and she later said that it was one of her favorite songs to record. A sequel, "This Year's Santa Baby", was recorded by Kitt in 1954, faces no commercial success; Kitt also reprised the original song for a 1963 re-recording with a more uptempo arrangement (Madonna's popular rendition for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas is based on this latter version). The song was featured in the 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy.

Covered in recorded and live performances by many other artists throughout the years, including Maria Muldaur, Everclear, RuPaul, Kate Ceberano, Taylor Horn, Shakira, Madonna, Jhene, Macy Gray, Natalie Merchant, Faith Evans, Cynthia Basinet, Boney James, Kylie Minogue, The Pussycat Dolls, Lina, LeAnn Rimes, Kellie Pickler, Mae West and Taylor Swift, as well as in an Ally McBeal episode by the title character (Calista Flockhart), by Chris Mitchell, and by The Swingle Singers. Miss Piggy sang the song in the film It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and recorded another version for the album A Green and Red Christmas.

Vanessa L. Williams, Patti LaBelle and Eartha Kitt performed the song in the 2001 animated Christmas TV special entitled Santa Baby! The version recorded
