Caterpillar Question

Sam needed to find out how many feet a caterpillar has. He went straight to the public library with his question. He walked up to the young man at the front desk. "I have a question about caterpillars," Sam said. "Are you the right person to ask?" The friendly young man smiled and said, "Not really. My job is to check out books from the library. The best person to talk to would be someone at the information desk."

So Sam walked over to the information desk. "I have a question about caterpillars," Sam asked politely. The librarian smiled and said, "Tell me your question and I'll tell you how to find an answer." The librarian looked really smart.

Sam spoke up, "I'm writing a report about caterpillars for school. I need to find out how many feet a caterpillar has."

"Well, sounds like an interesting question. I bet we could find the answer if we looked for it together." Sam was glad that she was helping, because the library seemed like a very strange place to him.

"Let's go over and look at the encyclopedia first," said the helpful librarian. "We will look in the encyclopedia with the letter 'c' on it, since the word caterpillar starts with the letter 'c'." The two of them walked over to the encyclopedia section and picked up a book with the letter 'c' on it. The book had many, many colorful pictures.

"Here it is!" shouted the librarian. Right there on the page were three whole paragraphs about caterpillars. And a picture too! A big color picture of a caterpillar. You could even see its face.

"Here's what we've been looking for," the friendly librarian said. "It says that a caterpillar has twelve different parts, and that each part has three legs. Sounds like a math problem to me," she said. "Perhaps you could help me with this part?"

Sam did some calculations and said, "Thirty-six! A caterpillar has thirty-six legs."

"Well done" said the librarian and patted Sam on his shoulder. "Now you know how to find an answer."

Сэму понадобилось разузнать, сколько ног у гусеницы. С этим вопросом он отправился прямиком в городскую библиотеку. Он подошел к конторке и спросил у молодого человека за стойкой: "У меня есть вопрос про гусениц. Это к вам?" Молодой человек улыбнулся и сказал: "Вообще-то нет. Моя работа — выдавать книги. Лучше всего спросить кого-нибудь в справочном отделе".

Сэм прошел в справочный отдел. "У меня есть вопрос про гусениц" — вежливо сказал он. Тетя-библиотекарь улыбнулась и произнесла: "Скажи мне, какой у тебя вопрос, и я подскажу, как найти на него ответ". У нее был такой умный вид!

"Я пишу реферат для школы. Мне нужно знать, сколько ног у гусеницы" — выпалил Сэм.

"Ну что ж, очень даже интересный вопрос. Я уверена, вместе мы сможем найти ответ".

Сэм был рад, что тетя вызвалась помочь, потому что сам он в библиотеке совершенно не ориентировался.

"Давай сначала глянем в энциклопедии" — сказала дружелюбная библиотекарша. — "Нам понадобится том на букву Г, потому что слово гусеница начинается на Г". Вдвоем они проследовали в отдел энциклопедий, и выбрали книгу с буквой Г. Внутри в ней было много-много разноцветных картинок.

"Вот здесь!" — воскликнула тетя-библиотекарь. На раскрытой странице гусеницам были посвящены целых три абзаца, и вдобавок с картинкой! На ней даже можно было разглядеть лицо гусеницы.

"Как раз то, что мы искали. Здесь сказано, что гусеница состоит из двенадцати частей, и у каждой части — по три ноги. Я не очень-то сильна в математике. Может, ты мне поможешь?" — спросила она.

Сэм задумался, прикинул что-то в уме и воскликнул: "Тридцать шесть! У гусеницы тридать шесть ног!"
