Ernst Krenek(1900-1991): Reisebuch aus den österreichischen Alpen, Op.62 (1929) - 10. Auf und ab
Up and Down [Auf und ab, No. 10] Up and down the people run, like fools, up and down these Alps the whole summer long, as if driven by an ancient curse, as if pursued by exploding blank cartridges. Impatient, studiously following the arid prophesies of travel books, alpine guides, timetables and brochures, they rush about, some this way, others that way, more enduring than enjoying, and exclaim: «How lovely! How lovely!» They photograph themselves and perhaps a mountain behind them, seeing nothing because they have to write postcards. A spirit of misanthropy grows huge among them, for everyone they meet is a hostile competitor for parking spots, restaurant tables, better cuisine, lookout points, hotel rooms, and everything else. The meaninglessness of their exertions stands written in their annoyed faces, but they will mindlessly do their duty, imposed by God knows what demon. The grand and ancient mountains hide their heads in boredom while the rabble steps on their feet.
