On this show, we discussed the phrasal verb “to pick something up” and we talked about a new chat lounge as well as listening to some audience members’ comments.
Study strategies at the English Lounge Bob talked about an email from Nao, who lives in Kansai (Osaka district) in Japan. She asked about the availability of a place where students could share their study strategies together. Bob stressed the importance of extensive reading, and Rob suggested keeping vocabulary categories to help build your lexicon.
We listened to 2 great voicemails: 1 from Ignacio in Argentina and 1 from Andreas in Germany. We suggested that “to broaden your horizon” or “to expand your horizon” are perhaps more appropriate than using the words “opening your horizon”. Phrasal Verb “to pick up” is a transitive phrasal verb and takes a direct object, so it can be split. It has several meanings: 1) it can mean to lift something with your hands e.g.: Bob picked up the TV and moved it. 2) it can mean to come and get someone in a car e.g.: What time will you pick me up? 3) it can mean to learn something easily e.g: Bob picked up Japanese very quickly. 4) it can mean to try to start a relationship with someone, often at a bar/pub e.g: Bob use to pick up a lot of girls in high school. 5) it can mean to grow or increase, especially in business e.g: Business is really picking up this quarter. ____________________________________________________
