The French pianist Lucas Debargue’s path to the international concert stage is radically different than most young performers in the classical music world. The 26 year-old came late to the instrument and didn’t receive regular formal training until he was in his early 20s. The Russian pianist and teacher Rena Sherashevskaya heard Lucas play in 2011 and decided to take a chance on teaching this young raw talent. The collaboration between Rena and Lucas led to his participation in the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. His fourth place finish in the prestigious contest, in which hundreds of pianists compete, astonished the music world. Luca Debargue spoke with Dave Beck in the KING FM studios this week. Lucas says his first passion as a young aspiring artist was not necessarily for the piano, but for music.
